Kenya’s ultimate hiking destination – to Mt. Kenya. That is an aspiration for thousands of Kenyans and visitors and we’re organising it as a 4 day hike

We’re still working out the in depth details but this is what we have worked out so far:

Day 1 – 10th Oct (National Holiday)

  • Depart Nairobi at 6am, begin drive to Mt. Kenya
  • With a washroom break or 2, we expect to arrive at Sirimon gate by 11:30am – starting altitude is 2650m
  • Once at the gate, we’ll have a quick lunch
  • Our hike will begin from Sirimon gate and our target for this day will be Old Moses Camp where we will stay the night
  • The trek will involve hiking through montane forest, followed by bamboo and giant heather sections and finally high altitude moorland
  • The camp is at an altitude of 3300m – thus our expected elevation change is 650m

Day 2 – 11th Oct

  • Early morning breakfast followed by 7am start for hiking
  • The hike will cross Ontulili river and further on Likii North river
  • We continue on uphill into Mackinders’ Valley where panoramic views welcome our entry
  • Expect to arrive at Shipton’s camp by 4pm – do keep a lookout for rock hyraxes and species of birds such as sunbirds
  • Early dinner and early to bed

Day 3 – 12th Oct

  • Very early departure from the camp at 2am
  • The early departure is needed to reach the summit of Lenana peak by sunrise
  • The climb is over frozen scree and rocky terrain and can take 3-4 hours
  • Mt. Kilimanjaro may be visible in good weather far towards the horizon
  • Once summitted, we then return to Shipton’s camp for a quick and full breakfast, short rest and then hike to Moses Camp
  • Dinner and sleep at Moses camp

Day 4 – 13th Oct
