Standing tall at 3,792m lies Table mountain which offers a more demanding climb than its sibling, 7 Ponds, which lies to the east. Both hikes begin at Mikeu in the Wanjohi area, but 7 Ponds quickly branches off within the first few meters, leaving Table Mountain adventurers to tackle a more challenging route.
The trail first descends to a river crossing, a deceptive warm-up before the real test begins—a brutal, near-vertical ascent stretching about 1 km. This punishing climb eventually eases into a more gradual ascent, leading hikers toward the breath-taking moorland section. A few meters into this open landscape, the summit finally reveals itself, standing boldly against the sky.
Reaching the peak requires full-body coordination, as the final stretch demands a bit of scrambling. However, it’s not as punishing as the climb up Kinangop. The entire hike spans 13-14 km, taking anywhere from 5 to 6 hours depending on pace and endurance.
This is firmly a difficult hike, but for those willing to embrace the challenge, the rewards are spectacular—panoramic views of the Aberdare Ranges, fascinating rock formations, and an unforgettable sense of achievement.
