Extremely tough 20km high altitude hike with elevation change from 3000m to 4200m. Only for experienced high altitude hikers

Mackinders hike offers a demanding yet rewarding one-day experience on Mt. Kenya through the scenic Naro Moru route. The trail begins at the Naro Moru Met station bandas and takes you through a variety of vegetation zones from dense bamboo forest and boggy tussock grass to expansive moorlands lined with giant lobelias.

The route climbs steadily to Teleki Valley, where Mackinders Camp sits at an elevation of 4,300m. Hikers gain approximately 1,252m in altitude over a total distance of 20km (return). Just before reaching the camp, you cross a river, with the final 500m stretch leading you to your destination. On a clear day, the valley offers breath-taking views of Batian, Nelion, and the surrounding rugged landscape.

Due to the high altitude and rough terrain, the hike requires a strategic, moderate pace to allow for proper acclimatization. Weather can be unpredictable ranging from sunshine to fog, wind, or even light snowfall and therefore preparation is key.

The hike typically takes 7–10 hours, depending on group pace and conditions. An early start (by 7:00 AM) is essential to make the most of the day and avoid racing daylight on the descent.

If you want to test your endurance and experience the magic of Mt. Kenya in just one day, Mackinders via the Naro Moru route is the perfect challenge.
