Clean highland air, open trails, graceful waves on the water and a serene environment. That’s Njabini – a trail friendly for beginners that will allow you to enjoy nature with plenty of time to spare
The trail starts and ends near Njabini town and has us visiting Sasamua dam. Birdlife is in plenty as well as sections of forest along some of the paths

Beginner
- Hiking level – a beginner level hike that will allow first time hikers to understand what hiking will involve. The trail is 10km long and fairly gentle
- Main attractions – wide open views, dam scenery, forest trails
- Type of hike – open grassland and forest hike
- Atmospheric conditions – due to mid high altitude, the area tends to be cool and cloudy
- Slipping hazard – very minimal for most of the trail since it’s fairly flat or gentle. However, near the end we will be crossing a stream over a fallen tree which could be slippery
- Steepness – fairly gentle with total elevation change at less than 50m
- Hiking path condition – open dirt roads followed by gently sloping paths along the dam
- Water usage – low to medium – recommend 1.5 liters depending on the weather
- Route visibility – the trail is generally visible except in the forested areas
- Biodiversity – numerous species of insects, birds and trees
- Good hiking boots
- Sun hat – to protect against the sun
- Water – at least 1.5 litres
- Snacks and lunch – since we expect to finish latest by 5pm, we recommend you bring snacks and lunch to eat while relaxing at scenic locations along the route
