Nthenge Njeru

Nthenge Njeru Waterfall in Embu County  is a beginner moderate 7-8 km hike that takes you east to discover the triple waterfalls that originate from the slopes of Mt. Kenya. Along the way, Kirimiri Forest forms a stunning backdrop, visible from the Embu-Meru highway. The sight of cascading white waters flowing through lush greenery is both captivating and inviting.

The trail offers a mix of scenic beauty and adventure, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced hikers. From tranquil forest paths to steep descents leading to breath-taking waterfalls, the experience is both thrilling and refreshing. The highlight of the hike is reaching the White Rock viewpoint, where panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes provide the perfect reward for the climb.

Beginner-moderate
  1. Hiking level – beginner moderate. Total hiking distance is around 7 km.
  2. Main attractions – Nthenge Njeru Falls, Thungu Falls, Kirimiri Forest, White Rock Viewpoint, Abseiling at Melody Camp.
  3. Type of hike – Forest Hike.
  4. Atmospheric conditions – Mild to Warm Temperatures
  5. Slipping hazard – Average as there are some sections with steep inclines both up and downhill.
  6. Steepness – Total elevation change is 250 meters.
  7. Hiking path condition – Some sections, especially leading to the waterfalls and through Kirimiri Forest, are steep and require careful footing.
  8. Water usage – Medium to high. Recommend a minimum of 2.5 litres depending on weather.
  9. Route visibility – The trail starts on a visible road path before branching into multiple footpaths at intersections. The descent to Nthenge Njeru Falls is steep but clear, while the climb to Kirimiri Forest follows narrower, less distinct trails. The ascent to White Rock Viewpoint is well-defined but rocky, requiring careful footing. The return path is clearer as it reconnects with the village road
  10. Biodiversity – The hike features dense indigenous trees, diverse bird species, vibrant butterflies, and aquatic life in waterfall pools.
