- Destination type: Hikes
Located in Kimunye is this privately developed fun area that hosts 3 waterfalls as well as river trails
The main waterfall has a large pool where you can slowly wade in and enjoy the cool waters, especially on a hot day. To add to the allure of the pool, 2 rustic swings have been fixed inside the pool and you can swing over the running waters
The other 2 waterfalls can be reached by hiking but swimming isn’t possible due to the strong nature of the falls. Reaching the 2nd waterfall requires careful wading through the river upstream to reach it
Though the total length of the hike is 5km, the hike to the 2nd waterfall is slippery and tricky and needs full attention to navigate it. This hike to the 2nd waterfall is optional
The destination is about 140 km from Nairobi and factoring in traffic, road conditions and washroom breaks, we expect to start the hike by 9am
- Hiking level – Beginner moderate level – Though it is short, the hike is beginner moderate. Total hiking distance is 5 km. Factors contributing to moderate hiking experience include mid high altitude, rocky river trek, slippery descent to the waterfall and wet weather
- Main attractions – rainforest type vegetation, 3 waterfalls, birds, butterflies, swings and more
- Type of hike – river and forest trek
- Atmospheric conditions – humid air in the rainforest, possible chances of rain depending on season, cool highland temperatures
- Slipping hazard – medium to high during the trek to the 2nd waterfall due to the mud, pebbles, wet slopes, wet forest sections. This is a hike you will definitely get dirty.
- Steepness – the trek to the 2nd waterfall takes the better part of the trail and gets rocky the further we go
- Hiking path condition – the first part is open enough for people to walk side by side but eventually the trails get narrow inside the forest
- Water usage – medium – recommend a minimum of 2 litres
- Route visibility – can be missing in places, especially in the section leading to the waterfall – thus the need to keep together
- Biodiversity – numerous species of insects, birds, fungi, trees and some domestic animals
Scenery upstream of waterfall no 1
