- Destination type: Hikes
On the shores of Lake Elementaita is an intriguing remnant of a volcanic mountain. The collapsed crater has a side profile that looks like a sleeping warrior – hence the name of the hill and of this hike
This hike is approximately 12km long and is categorised as moderate due to the steep sides of the crater and the long walk along the lake shore in the sun
During the first section we may also pass through some of the woodland forests that are found close to the shoreline and then make a beeline for the hill
The starting and ending points of the hike are different, hence once started, the hike must be completed
Full day trip
It takes about 3.5 hours to get to the starting point depending on road conditions and traffic
Moderate
- Hiking level – Firmly a moderate hike. Total hiking distance is 12-13 km. If times allows, a 2nd smaller hill called Ugali Hill can be added for an extra challenge. Factors contributing to moderate hiking experience include long hiking distance in the sun and heat, steep hill climbs, hot weather and dry environment.
- Main attractions – hill climb, rocky terrain, Lake Elementaita, chances of seeing flamingos and other water birds, views
- Type of hike – hill hike
- Atmospheric conditions – due to the mid low altitude and dry area, the weather tends to be hot and dry but evenings may present the occasional thunderstorm
- Slipping hazard – 1st part – very low risk on the first 6km since the ground is fairly flat. However on the hill itself the slope becomes steep with small stones falling and sliding, so there is some medium risk
- Steepness – The sides of Sleeping Warrior hill become steep quickly, thus care must be taken. Total elevation change is almost 200m with the highest altitude being 1970m at
- Hiking path condition – flat trails along the lake followed by forest trails which return us back to flat trails and finally the hill slopes and walk along the top. Most of the trail is open but the climb up the hill is twisting and winding with scattered bushes
- Water usage – high – recommend a minimum of 2.5 litre depending on weather
- Route visibility – the trail is generally visible except in the forested areas
- Biodiversity – numerous species of insects, birds and trees
- Good hiking boots
- Sun hat – to protect against the sun
- Water – at least 2.5 litres
- Snacks and lunch – since we expect to finish latest by 6pm, we recommend you bring snacks and lunch to eat while relaxing at scenic locations along the route
